Connected Southeast Michigan

MTC and MDOT are collaborating on a deployment of up to 20,000 vehicles that extends across southeast Michigan, from Ann Arbor to Detroit

MTC is working closely with the Michigan Department of Transportation and automotive industry partners to develop a large deployment of connected vehicles and infrastructure that will extend across much of southeastern Michigan to address real-world transportation problems in this region.  This will be the first of its kind in the world. Features of the deployment include:

  • As many as 20,000 vehicles
  • Most vehicles will be company-owned, employee-driven fleets
  • Up to 500 infrastructure nodes to be installed
    • Located based on safety and congestion needs
    • Near OEM facilities
    • Some level of added data backhaul, including cloud services
  • Up to 5,000 safety devices distributed/installed
    • Aftermarket safety devices
    • Retrofit safety devices
    • Pedestrian safety devices
    • Nomadic seed devices
  • Fully functional security system
  • Operational 2017 - 2019
